Project note
The clients came with clear requirements and little time to spare. Their professional commitments meant that the brief had to be understood quickly and resolved decisively: the design was finalised in three meetings over three weeks, and the site works were completed in ten.
The brief
A brief set by busy lives.
The clients wanted interiors that were elegant but easy to maintain, contemporary in character, with light-coloured walls and a few deliberate accents. With two children in the house, the youngest a toddler, they were also particular that no furniture detail should become a hazard.
Edges and handles are rounded, tall units are anchored to walls and, where possible, to ceilings, and there is no glass at low level.
Planning for family and work
Open for family, quiet for work.
The couple’s extended family lives in the city and visits often, so living, dining and circulation are treated as one continuous interior. Rather than divide the shared spaces with walls, the design uses furniture, ceiling planes, lighting and changes in material to mark out different territories within it. Purpose-built storage is absorbed into the architecture, keeping the main sequence open.
Against the light walls, a few accents carry the character: a dark stone media wall, a black-and-white kitchen and a blue bedroom with custom joinery.
One of the couple works largely from home, on work that demands sustained concentration. The large master bedroom made room for a dedicated workstation, set apart from the life of the house. It is planned for multiple screens under low, glare-free ambient light, in quiet.
