Thyagaraj Residence
The house had to be transformed without being altered. Existing tiled floors were to remain untouched; no wall could be moved, no plan opened up and no window added.

Project note
Every change had to be made within the house as it stood. Mirrors, bespoke screens, cabinetry, wall treatments and furniture became the means by which its character and sense of space could change.
The brief
Vibrant, layered and made for a family that cooks.
The client wanted a vibrant, colourful home with a rich, multi-material palette. It was to be dense and layered to the point of exuberance, and closely interwoven with elements that celebrate the family’s South Indian heritage. It also had to suit an unusual household: everyone in the family, from the grandparents to the grandchildren, loves to cook.
The kitchen was already open, and it became the centre of the house: a shared room around which three generations gather.
The design approach
Changing space without moving walls.
Elsewhere, mirrors and bespoke screens do the work that walls could not. The mirrors extend rooms that could not be enlarged. The screens are not applied decoration: they filter views, mark transitions between zones and allow connected spaces to keep a degree of enclosure.
Custom cabinetry, wall treatments and furniture carry a common material language through the house. Variations in colour and detail keep that language from becoming uniform, so the home holds together without losing the density the client asked for.
